Production "Finesse" was co-written by Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence, Christopher Brody Brown, James Fauntleroy, Johnathan Yip, Ray Romulus, Jeremy Reeves and Ray McCullough II. Its production was handled by the former three under their alias Shampoo Press & Curl, along with the latter four as The Stereotypes. Mars, Lawrence, Brown and Fauntleroy served as the song's background vocalists. The recording was done and engineered by Charles Moniz with additional engineering assistance by Jacob Dennis at Glenwood Place Studios in Burbank, California. It was mixed at MixStar Studios in Virginia Beach by Serban Ghenea, with John Hanes serving as mixing engineer. Tom Coyne mastered the song at Sterling Sound in New York City.[6] Composition The album version borrows its style from R&B and new jack swing.[7][8] It was described by The New York Times as "taking the leap from 1984 to ’88, with crackling drum machine production."[9] In its turn, the remix is dubbed as a funk and new jack swing song. Critics have it compared to Michael Jackson's "Remember The Time".[10] The song is written in the key of F minor Chart performance Following the release of the remix which features Cardi B and its official music video on January 4, 2018 at midnight, "Finesse" launched at number 35 on the US Billboard Hot 100 for the issue dated January 13, 2018. "Finesse" entered the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart at number 13 with just one day sales of 30,000 according to Nielsen Music, drew in 8.7 million streams from the time of its release, and also received early radio support allowing it to enter Billboard's Radio Songs chart at number 49 with 26 million audience impressions. After its first complete tracking week, "Finesse" soared to number three on the Hot 100 marking Bruno Mars' fifteenth and Cardi B's fourth top 10 single on the Hot 100. The song climbed 13-2 on the Digital Songs chart selling 87,000 copies in its second week. The song also debuted at number one on the Streaming Songs chart with 38.3 million US streams, a 342% incline from the previous week, and climbed 49-12 on Radio Songs with an overall 52 million audience impressions. Mars also made history as becoming the second male artist in Hot 100 history, the first being Lionel Richie, and sixth overall, to achieve three top-10s from each of his first three studio albums.[11] In the same week, Cardi B also made history as becoming the first female artist to simultaneously hold three positions in the top ten for 3 consecutive weeks. "Finesse" has so far peaked at number three for seven non-consecutive weeks on the Hot 100. Finesse allowed Mars to pass The Weeknd, becoming the act with the third-most number one song on the Rhythmic Songs chart this decade.[12] On the Radio Songs chart, "Finesse" peaked at number one, becoming Mars' eight number one on the Radio Songs. Among men, Mars passed Usher for the most leaders among male acts, since the chart's 1990 start. At that time, Rihanna led the list with 13 songs peaking at number one on the chart.[13] Worldwide, it reached the top of the charts in Croatia and Israel, and the Top 10 in Australia, Belgium, Bolivia, Canada, El Salvador, Ireland, Latvia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom. Music video The music video for the remix of "Finesse" premiered on January 4, 2018 and was directed by Mars and Florent Dechard and produced by Media Magik Entertainment.[14] The video pays homage to the opening theme of the popular FOX sketch comedy television series In Living Color, which ran from 1990 to 1994.[15] The video received 13 million views within the first two days of release.[16] It features Phil Tayag, Danielle Polanco, Bianca Brewton, TJ Lewis and Ysabelle Capitulé as dancers.[17] Live performances "Finesse" was performed live by Mars in the Apollo Theater alongside the rest of 24K Magic for his CBS prime time special titled "Bruno Mars: 24K Magic Live at the Apollo", which aired on November 29, 2017.[18][19] The remixed version of the song was performed live by Mars and B at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.[20] At the 2018 iHeart Music Awards, Cardi B sang a medley of her singles, including "Finesse".[21] "Finesse" is the opening song on the 24K Magic World Tour. Usage in media The song is featured in the fourth episode of the television series 9-1-1.[22] Track listing Digital download[23] No. Title Length 1. Trainor co-wrote it with Jacob Kasher Hindlin and Andrew Wells, who produced it as well. "No Excuses" was announced in February 2018 along with its official single artwork. "No Excuses" is a pop song with country influences. It has empowering lyrics against sexism. Critics noted that "No Excuses" was a return to the sound of Trainor's album Title. The song's feminist lyrics were well-received, and it was referred to as a girl-power anthem. Colin Tilley directed the music video for "No Excuses", which accompanied the song's release on March 1, 2018. Problems playing this file? See media help. Trainor co-wrote "No Excuses" with Jacob Kasher Hindlin and Andrew Wells, who also handled the song's production.[2][3] It was written and recorded on January 17, 2018, within 7 hours.[4] She revealed the song's title and overall vibe on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon by saying, "don't disrespect me. I'm a woman, have you never met one before?"[5] In the following days, Trainor revealed song lyrics including: "I don't disrespect you, don't you disrespect me", and "Have you lost your mind...open up your eyes."[6] On February 25, 2018, Trainor referenced the song in a letter she published on her site and social media, followed by unveiling of the single's artwork the next day.[7][8] It is composed in the key B major with a tempo of 115 beats per minute in common time. The chords in the verses alternate between F♯7 and B, while Trainor's vocals span from F♯3 to B4.[9] "No Excuses" was one of the last songs written for the album. While describing the song, Trainor said "it needs to be heard right now -- the world could use a song like this. It's about respect -- we need a little more R-E-S-P-E-C-T in the world, especially right now," and called it the "sassiest" song on its parent album.[10] Sonically, "No Excuses" is a pop song with country influences.[11][12][13] It was described as a sexism-blasting empowerment anthem. It features Trainor singing over a "funky, retro" beat.[14] Trainor sings the lyrics, "What you sipping on that got you talking crazy? Looking at me sideways, always coming at me," over an incandescent beat. According to Idolator writer Mike Nied, the song is a confident take-down of a disrespectful suitor, that has "fiery" production and playful lyrics and Trainor sounds "right at home" on it.[11] Critical reception Writing for the Daily Express, Shaun Kitchener thought that "No Excuses" was Trainor returning to the "bouncy pop roots" of her first studio album, Title (2015).[15] Entertainment Tonight Canada writer Shakiel Mahjouri noted that the song is taking an aim at sexism, and added that the funky and retro song showcases Trainor's "trademark wit and attitude".[16] MTV News' Sam Prance described the song as "amazing" and "incredible and dubbed it a "stomping girl-power anthem" with a brilliant and catchy chorus.[17] Writing for Bustle, Emily Czachor praised the track, writing that it "touts a marked air of female grit," which seems "particularly relevant right now."[18] It was described as a "newly minted, funk-laden" song.[18] Jezebel's Clover Hope likened it to Aretha Franklin's rendition of "Respect" and called it a "sassy Time's Up-inspired jam", adding "the orchestrated sass is built into Trainor’s voice."[19] A Plus writer Jill O'Rourke was positive of the song, calling it "empowering" and adding, "it's all about demanding respect."[20] Music video Three women stand in front of a blue background with two of them blindfolded. The music video for "No Excuses" features visual effects showing Trainor with two carbon copies of herself. The song's music video, directed by Colin Tilley, premiered on the same day as the song's release, which Trainor had previously teased on her Instagram account along with a short behind the scenes look at it.[21][22] The video features visual effects showing the singer with two "carbon copies" of herself.[23] The video features looks inspired by the '80s, including Trainor donning a denim jacket and another one that looks like a cheerleader outfit. Patrick Hosken of MTV News noted that the looks "belong in a mall-pop video from 1987."[24] An official choreography video for "No Excuses" was released in collaboration with Zumba, on March 5, 2018.[25] It was directed by Tim Milgram. The visual features a "fun, easy" and empowering routine.[26] It made Trainor the first recording artist to star in an official Zumba choreography video. Describing the initiative, the singer stated "I always hear my music playing in Zumba classes when I'm at the gym so I thought—let's reach out to Zumba and create something special for 'No Excuses,' We both believe in empowerment! I want this choreography to empower everyone out there to get on their feet, and I want them to think about respect and sassiness and loving yourself."[27][28][29] The VP of marketing for Zumba said, "Zumba has always been focused on inspiring others to feel empowered and confident, and this is something we hear in all of Meghan's music that makes her the ideal partner for us."[27] Live performances Trainor performed "No Excuses" live on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on March 2, 2018.[30][31] During this performance, the singer wore white trousers and a denim jacket, and was accompanied by a vocal quartet.[32] According to Idolator's Mike Nied, Trainor delivered "pitch-perfect" vocals in front of the simple stage that featured a lot of glitter.[33] She also performed it on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on March 5, 2018.[34][35] Trainor wore a glitter-infused top with a "dazzling" jacket and wide-legged pants, joined by a group of four backup dancers and vocalists who were black, crystallized outfits. A spacey background was projected on a screen and it ended with the group chanting in unison.[36][37] On April 6, 2018, Trainor will perform the song on Sounds Like Friday Night.[38] Charts Chart (2018) Peak position Australia (ARIA)[39] 60 Canada (Canadian Hot 100)[40] 50 Canada AC (Billboard)[41] 25 Canada CHR/Top 40 (Billboard)[42] 29 Canada Hot AC (Billboard)[43] 28 Hungary (Single Top 40)[44] 21 Japan Hot Overseas (Billboard)[45] 18 New Zealand Heatseekers (RMNZ)[46] 4 Scotland (Official Charts Company)[47] 28 Sweden Heatseeker (Sverigetopplistan)[48] 6 Switzerland (Schweizer Hitparade)[49] 73 UK Singles (Official Charts Company)[50] 77 US Billboard Hot 100[51] 46 US Adult Contemporary (Billboard)[52] 23 US Adult Top 40 (Billboard)[53] 15 US Mainstream Top 40 (Billboard)[54] 17 Radio and release history Region Date Format Label Ref. Trainor co-wrote it with Jacob Kasher Hindlin and Andrew Wells, who produced it as well. Epic Records released it on March 1, 2018, as the lead single from Trainor's upcoming third major-label studio album. It features visual effects showing Trainor with two carbon copies of herself and Trainor donning various outfits that are inspired by the 1980s, in pastel-colored backdrops.
